Curtains close for a final time on ‘Summer Sessions’ at Pyramids
8th September 2017
Shopping centre has been an entertainment hub all summer long
Following 26 days of activity, with 16 local amateur acts, 15 workshops delivered by three local community groups and five professional performers, Pyramids’ ‘Summer Sessions’ secured its position as the number one entertainment event in Birkenhead this holiday.
Throughout August, visitors to Pyramids had an extra special shopping experience where they marvelled at magicians and musicians, were serenaded by singing sensations and treated to terrific theatre acts and more.
Entertainers of all ages performed at various locations at the centre, which proved a big hit with shoppers. Derek Millar, Centre Director at Pyramids, said: “From customers to the centre management team, everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the free entertainment provided by the very talented locals we have here in the town and surrounding areas.
“It was near impossible not to stop and enjoy the acts as it’s so infectious seeing people enjoying themselves on stage. It put smiles on many faces and an extra spring in everyone’s step.
“We’ve welcomed a former X Factor contestant, a young lad who has sung with Rita Ora and many other up-and-coming stars destined for a bright future. Somewhere down the line we might even be able to say we saw them here first at Pyramids,” said Derek.
‘Summer Sessions’ also included a number of free community-led art workshops one of which was run by local youth charity, HYPE (Helping Young People Everywhere), which saw hundreds of children and adults taking part in its Park Inner Park project.
The HYPE initiative is rejuvenating an area of Birkenhead Park and visitors to the workshops were challenged to draw anything they wanted that began with the letter ‘P’. All artwork was displayed in the window of the workshop unit as part of a competition, which will see selected designs being made into a special mural for the park.
Also doing their bit for a great cause was singing trio, Scarlet’s Angels, who collected £150 in donations for the charity, Maggie’s Merseyside – an organisation which provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and their family and friends.
‘Inside Outside’ was another hugely popular art event organised by the Williamson & Priory Friends in partnership with Wirral Methodist Housing Association. Birkenhead was invited to join local artists in a number of drop-in creative activities such as making kites, mini-hotels for bugs, bird boxes and flowers.
Derek said: “‘Summer Sessions’ has been a spectacular event in bringing the community together to enjoy a host of fantastic free entertainment and activities. Thank you to all the wonderful performers and to our visitors for making it a huge success.”
